I often tell claimants that if they have access to a local SSA office close to them, then they should visit the file and file an applications. That way any doubts they have can be cleared right away.

Visiting the local SSA office is a good idea, but it can mean waiting for hours in some places. There are 3 main advantages of filing for Social Security Disability using the online application on SSA’s website: 1) you don’t have to wait at the SSA office, 2) you can actually start and stop the application….say you cannot sit for long, you can log out and log back in with the code they give you (but be sure to write down the code when it comes up early in the online application process), and 3) the claimant actually controls what the answers on the forms are….sometimes when you apply in person, the SSA employee who helps you apply records information in their system that is different than what you tell them. Applying online gives the disabled person more control over the process and the information.
